E39 heater / AC - can no longer adjust volume

Have an E39

Adjusting the volume settings on the blower for heater and/or A/C
no longer works to adjust the heater / AC output

What is the issue? What is the fix?

Thanks all

Just advised another member about FSU (final stage Unit) they are known to fail on our cars and will affect heater blower function and will also cause battery drain , yours could be that, it is common.
