E39 Gear Indicator on Dashboard & EWS problems

Hi all,

I recently bought '97 e39 528 and have been using it for month. Lately while I was driving, I notice that gear indicator on dashboard is sometimes went on and off but only for P and N position, the other position, R, D, DS, 12345 were good.

a couple days ago, my car suddenly cannot started. but all the indicators are on, except the gear indicator still sometimes went on and off for P position. I've checked with my local mechanic and he said that the problems related to EWS device. he jumped the EWS and the engine start to crank and on - but somehow I'm still thinking that this has something to do with the gear position.

I've read bentley's book and it said something like EWS are related to gear position - so when gear is not in P or N, there will be no signal to EWS to start the engine

how do I check that the problem is really EWS or gear selector? any help would be appreciate, thanks.
