My 5 series is a '97 E39 with the amber indicator lenses & standard front headlamps. I have seen some after market items to convert the headlamps to the Angel halo type along with clear indicators and the rear lights to clear indicator lenses too.

What year did the lights change? If I was to change the front & rear lights are there any other external mods I would need to make to assume the look of a newer model or would the lights be sufficient?

I have a 540i also. Bought the Angel eye Headlights off of ebay from Pavrac. They were a good deal and just like OEM 2001+ (the year they were introduced). Had to slightly bend the a/c fill line to make them fit but they fit without a problem otherwise. Be careful when you try to bend the a/c line. It is aluminum.
Pavrac also sells celis look a like tail lights, clear/red. These mods make your 97 look just like a 2001+ (except for the black side & bumper moldings). I am looking to replace my side and bumper modings with color matched trim. Going to use the side moldings, paintable, from the 2001+. A slight mod is needed to accomplish this but they will fit. Once that's done it will look just like a 2001+.
Try Pavac's ebay store...........
