I have an E39 2001 525 that I would like to swap a 6-speed into. I have found a kit that supplies the tranny, driveshaft and crossmember to swap in an E36 M3 tranny into my 5-speed car. The cost is about $3,700.
I also am considering the installation of a supercharger for this car producing about 291 hp once installed. Cost about $5,500. Would an E36 M3 engine swap in easily into my car? Limited funds that limits me from buying a 540.

Thanks
Hmmmm how much is your 2001 525 worth? Your resale value will drastically drop like a bag of dirt once you stick another engine/tranny in there that's not suppossed to be there. I would say sell your car and get a 2000 Model E39 ///M5 with some mileage on it...
Blue Book for a 525 is about $29,180
Now when you add Tranny that's $3700
Supercharger is around $5000
///M3 Engine can be had for about $3000
You're looking at $6-7k plus LABOR ($3000 on up) to mod your car....
Grand total $10k
That's $39k
Sell your car for $29-30K add the same money you want to spend on your 525 and voila....
You've got yourself an M5 that is covered by factory warranty.... I bullshit you not...
If you want to do things right, A 2000 Year model E39 M5 can be had from the mid $30's to low $40's
I wish you the best of luck in your decision whatever it may be...

I agree with all of you guys, but I got the 525 on a sweet company car lease buyout. I only spent $17,000 on it, so I have some room to mod it before shifting into an M5. This would be modified piece by piece as I won't be able to dump $10,000 straight out of the wallet at this time. Any tips or info if I was to follow through with the mods? Are there any good shops in PA that does this kind of work on a regular basis.
