Question E39 Dashboard temperature display -40F

My E39 dashboard temperature now displays -40F solid.

Any idea of what needs fixing?

The outside temp sensor is damaged or missing.

In my case, it's in the brake cooling duct on the driver side. And if it's in place, it may just be disconnected.
