E39 Code P0340 Won't go away

I am new to this forum. I have had no luck on others and hope there is such a thing as good advice out there.

I have a 2000 528I with 134K.

I have the common P0340 - Cam. Position Sensor code and the SES light. It is the only code showing. I have swapped the CPS sensors, both intake and exhaust, and the Crank sensor with no change. I have continuity between both CPS wires and the DME.

The only thing that I have discovered to be unusual is that the connector that connects the power management engine harness and the DME is cracked lengthwise. It is the only dme plug that is damaged. It still appears that the connections are made properly event though the plug is damaged.

I am willing to swap the harness but I an doubtful that this is the source of the problem. Is there any way to tell if the DME itself is bad? Wouldn't there be more symptoms than the one code? I know that there are a lot of owners that have had this same problem, but I have yet to find a thread that goes beyond the "keep trying new sensors" suggestions and explains how the problem was actually fixed. I doubt that the culprit is the aftermarket sensors and actually tried the BMW sensor (from a dealer) with no change.

Any ideas or advice is appreciated.
