My precious E39 has recently developed rattling windows in both drivers side and passenger side doors when windows are in the closed position. If I drop the windows slightly the noise goes. Very strangely somedays both sides will be quiet and the following day noisy again. I wonder if it could be a door seal problem. Although I am used to using the odd spanner I do not look forward to having to take the door panels off.
Any help gratefully received. By the way I reckon this to be the best of all the BMW forums.
The noise can be caused by many things like door clips and/or weatherstriping squeaking, if loose parts are present in the door it will sound more like rattling. I say take the door panel out and look at your window while it is going up and down and make sure it is free and not touching anything when in closed position.

Thanks BillB- when the weather gets a little warmer here in the U.K I'll take the door panels off. Cheers.
It kind of sounds like your window tracks might be a little loose... door panel removal isn't that involved. I just did it on my driver side door because the bolt that holds one of the window tracks had backed out enough to start scratching the window!

Get yourself some Gummi pfhledgge (spelling) or rubber care grease, smear this sparingly inside the window channels, door seals, I carry out this procedure every three months.
