E39 AIR CON Pusher fan

used: The Air Con pusher fan (in front of the radiator) has stopped working. To check things before I replace it, as it is a costly item over £200 from BMW just for the part.

I think the fuses would be 9 and 20 but can someone please confirm this. I there any others I should check?

The seems to be a connector (4 cables two fairly thick) on the left hand side of the grill - radiator just next to the lights. I think this might be to the fan. If this is indeed the correct connector which two wire can I connect to a battery to see if the fan works and the problem lies else where?

: If the problem is the fan, what sort of a job is it to replace it, it would seem that a lot of the front of the car seems to be removed just to get to it.

Does anyone know where I could get a cheaper replacement

Hey Duncan,

You can direct power to the four wires connector to troulble shoot your fan motor issue.

- The big brown wire is negative, the rest of the wires are positive. So if you hook up a battery negative to brown and any of the positive wires to the positive terminal should cause the fan to spin, and this is assuming your motor and the resistor pack are still good.

-If your fan motor spins when you power direct from the connector then your problem is upstream and that means it could be either the relay or the fan switch.

- if your motor doesn't spin when direct power to the connector then your problem is in the auxiliary fan assembly and that could be the resistor pack or the motor.

I have coonecte the battery direct to the fan and still now movement, so it looks loike it needs replacing, anyone know how difficult this would be

It's not a bad job.

Remove headlight ass'y, both sides
Remove front bumper
Now you can see every thing and it is very much straight forward.
