Greetings. My 98 540 auto has an intermittant jerky gear change when shifting from 2 to 1 as I come to a stop. Only occurrs in D and usually when I have been driving in peak stop-go traffic for a while. (temp related?) This problem has been with me for over a year, but as of recently, occurs more often. It is sometimes harsh enough to jolt the car!
Any ideas?
You need a fluid and filter change, BMW say its a lifetime seal, WRONG!, ZF whom make the boxes and Ive been to their factory in Germany for a service, ZF recommend 70-80,000 miles and 30-35,000 thereafter, filter/gasket and 'o' ring is obtainable from BMW the fluid is also but is expensive from them, so you will have to cross match it on the net as I'm not sure what the equivalent is there in S.A, If you are doing it yourself I have instructions, if an indie is doing it you will need to keep an eye on him as it needs to be done properly, if BM are doing it, well they know how too.

I stepped in a plate of Pasta the other day - now I have to worry about my Carbonara footprint!
Thanks for the info. I usually do the service & minor repairs myself and have a number of BMW tools, so the gearbox service may not be beyond my ability.
I would really apreciate the info on how to go about the above.
I'd appreciate the info on how to do the gearbox oil/filter change.... mine is fine at the moment but with long journeys in high ambient temps i'm sure that won't last. I'm a believer in prevention rather than cure...
