Okay, I have been searching the net to no avail to find out what is the difference between the 540 with sports package and without. I am looking to find out what the difference is because I am looking to purchase a 99-00 540 very soon. I know that as soon as I get the car i will be doing major mods on it. So if I am looking to upgrade the suspension should I still look for a 540 with the sports package? I definately plan on changing the shocks & springs and also add anti-roll bars and strut tower braces. I may even be doing coilovers. Would it be a waste of money to get one with a sports package only to upgrade everything in the near future?

I'm new to the board so forgive if I asked something thats already been answered. i have already went thru the 28 pages of this channel but havent found anything that answers my questions. Any help would be appreciated!

If you get one with the sport package, I see no point in lowering or modding the suspension. The sport package comes with upgraded sports suspension.

Thanks for your response. So the factory sports suspension is better than getting 3rd party shocks & springs? Does the factory sports package come with anti-roll bars and strut tower braces? If anyone has done coilovers on there E39, I would appreciate your comments on them versus regular sports suspension. Basically, i want to get the suspension right before doing any performance mods such as chips, intake, exhaust, etc.

My other question is if I were to go with a 540 without the sports package, would the installation of performance shocks & springs be just as good as the factory sports package. Just trying to weigh my options and see which would be better for the buck(s).

I recommend you drive a 540 with sports package at your closest dealer with one on the lot. If you like it, buy one with a sports package. If you don't like it, buy one without the sports package and upgrade.

There's lots of info on suspension upgrades

Humanoid's 540

I can send you other links if you have more questions.

I am new to BMW's also. I drove a 530 without the sport pkg and a couple of 540"s with it.

What you get with the sport pkg. is Better seats, wheels, & tires, firmer suspension, & I think some computer related calculator functions. I cannot say enough about the seats! My 02 540 also has some gwiz M5 badges on the wheels and shifter (which impress my son).

My 540 also has a 6 sp manual transmission. Sadly I seldom get past 4th gear during my daily commutes. I believe that a 5 sp is standard on most models.

I know that BMW is fameous for the 6's and I am sure that they are excellent, BUT you have to try the 540!!!!

Are the seats that come with the sports package the ones where the front seats have the motorized thigh support? Also, is this just an option of the sports package or was that also an option for non-sports 540's? Other than that what else is good about these seats?

Good info, just wanted to correct a couple minor points: ALL 540i's have the extra computer functions over the 528i/530i, not just the sport packages. Also, all 540i manuals are 6-speeds, sport or not. The 528i/530i manuals are 5-speeds.

Yes, the sport package seats have the motorized thigh supports (at least the ones I have seen do). Better than that, they have larger side bolsters, which will "grip" you better during hard cornering. Most people say they are more comfortable, unless you are a large person, then they get uncomfortable after a little while.
