Real Techy one this.
I have 185,000 miles on my 1996 E39 540 six speed.
Gearbox is functional but becoming notchy when selecting lower gears due to general wear. Rest of car 100%. Cannot find anyone in U/K who reconditions BMW gearboxes. BMW want £2500 which is 50% of cars value. So looked for a good breaker unit, and found a six speed unit £500 (not sure E34/39) but casting and mounting looked the same, only visual difference being the actual bell housing area wasn’t drilled to take the “Top Dead Centre” pickup off the flywheel used on my E39 engine. Anyone know whether this unit would fit/function assuming I were able to drill this mounting hole accurately in the casting.

I cannot believe that in the UK you are not able to find someone to recon your auto, with so many BMW cars there. Here in New Zealand i know of 5blokes i can go to and get the job done.i think you need to hunt a little harder !
Fitting up the 6speed is actually quite a big job in your car.Don't get me wrong...it can,and has been done.....lots of times.....down here anyway.........but it is a cost plus plus sort of job.You also need to buy a pedalbox to mount your clutch and brake pedals in,which is nothing but a curse to fit, ( the entire dash has to come out ) then you need a clutchfork and cables, speedo cable is different, driveshaft lenght is different,........makes the recon of the auto look easy ahy !!
Do you think your auto just needs a good flush out,new oil and pan screen ?
Hope this helps you. all the best.

My apologies............I read you wrong !!!...............ok you have a 6speed...still getting that reconed is easy. They are just new parts and reaasemble. There must be someone there you can find to do the job with so many cars there.

Best of luck.
