I have a 2002 E39 530d Touring. The other night it just cut out whilst I was driving along. Currently at the garage, they are scratching their heads and I am hoping for some guidance!
Symptoms;
Tuesday night; came out of the office and car would not start (car had been standing 2 hours). Car started after leaving 30 mins and was fine.
Wednesday night; noticed that the car seemed unresponsive at 2000rpm, but just for a few seconds. This happened a few times.
Later that night, engine cut out at 30mph and has not started since. RAC rescue job.
Car has done 180 miles since filling, tank gauge approx 70% full
Garage has not reported any codes, battery is not holding charge well. All fuses and relays reported as OK. Garage is getting "man with more sophisticated code reader" at which point I suspect they may be stumped.
Reading thru posts, looks like it may be pick-up fuel pump problem, can this be simply ruled in or out? Any ideas gratefully received! Thanks.
I don't have a lot of experience but your problem sounds like one I had in the past...bad fuel. Every once in a while you can get a dose of junk...IE water etc. from the filling station.
Was your last fuel purchase from somewhere unusual for you?
Adam, thanks for post. Does not appear to be fuel quality, filled from a known garage and have done 180 miles on the tank. No spluttering, car just cut out. No air bubbles in the fuel line....
