E39 1999 523i - Radio Volume Stuck

Hi
I was driving home this evening and changing a CD in my multichanger using the in car head unit. It failed to change the CD and now shows CD -00. I have also found that my volume control has stopped working from both the radio and steering wheel. Could this be an ignition switch problem or something else? Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Can you turn the unit off & on?
Can you extract the CD magazine from the changer?
Are you able to do any of the other functions on the head unit?
Try disconnecting the battery for 10 - 15 minutes and see if it comes back to life.

AMBERLDAVIS is on a distinguished road
Im a neewbie...I just purchased a "Fixer upper" 1997 Bmw 528i for my daughter. Seem to have a similar problem. There are some things leading me to think that maybe it is stuck in anti-theft mode?
I am not sure if these are all the result of the same problem but here is whats going on..
No power to the radio
remote key not working
blinkers work on the outside but not on the dash
abs light is on (car was involed in an accident with a curb)
airbag light is on
Also I found a dark green relay in the trunk but not installed....not sure what it goes to but it's points are black which leads me to believe it is no good (hense why it is not installed). Any help would be appreciated.

The problem appears to have fixed itself the following morning. Lets hope that it does not come back...
