try locking the door... turning the key completely to the right as far as it goes and holding it for a few seconds... that might synchronize the locks. if it doesnt work it might be a bad lock acutator... some of the other guys might help you if thats the case.
if you mean lock, as in can't push the lock down as you get out (manually)...
its because bmw makes you lock the door from outside with the key so you don't lock your keys in.
with the door closed you should be able to lock it though.
ex: you're driving through a bad part of town, and want to push the lock down.

Coming from a mercedes, how do you like the BMW?
I Know lots of people who think "Ah, these cars ride too rough, etc, etc" and then theres lots who appreciate that sportier suspension.

no they do not ride too rough, they just tell you all about the road you're on lol
I had an '89 260E (W124) and I have a '77 300D (W123) so it can be compared to my '89 525i very fairly.
Honestly, I love the styling on the Mercedes and if that were the only criteria I would never choose a BMW. In all other aspects, however, it is very difficult to defend the Mercedes. I think the BMW is superior to the Mercedes in technology, power (167 HP vs. 158 HP with a 0.1L smaller motor), but above all, handling. The BMW handles like a dream compared to the 260E and some of the technology in the '89 Mercedes (transmission, cruise control, air conditioning) is virtually unchanged from my '77. I have been slightly disappointed by the build quality on some parts of the body of the BMW, however. Some stuff on the interior does not fasten properly and there are some other rough spots. I never had either of these problems with my Mercedes'. Then again i have never seen a pre '92 Mercedes with working cruise control.
Overall, I would pick the BMW but if I could find myself a '94 500E (very limited edition car) no BMW past, present, or future could compare (for me anyway).

Very interesting. I have never compared the older bmw to older Mercedes, but when it comes to the late 90s.... BMW is waaay ahead. Mercedes is making a nice comeback from what they were just a few years ago, though. I looked up a 94' 500E with an unlimited search radius and found nothing. wow. What was so special about that year in partifular?
Your right though, BMW does leave out some fit and finish in the inside.. well.. when they're brand new, they're nearly pefect, but they go fast. Like the "cupholders" of the newer generation ones for example.
Well, hope you enjoy your BMW and come around here for help when ya need it.

It's not the year that is special, it is the model. The 500E was W124 based (see picture below) but featured a factory-installed wide-body kit, a 5.0L V-8 engine putting out 320HP, a racing suspension, a more luxurious interior, a larger drive shaft tunnel and other racing oriented changes. It was produced in collaboration with Porsche in very limited numbers (I think about 1000 made it to the U.S. between '92-'94). If you ever go to a Mercedes board and look it up you'll see the kind of esteem this car is held in by those guys.
