E34 Heater Control Valve

Hi, The passenger side of my 1989 E34 was constantly receivng hot air, so I'm replacing the heater control valve ( sometimes know as the Water Valve) which is essentially a solenoid switch.

Can someone please tell me how to check that the replacement is working before I fit it?

Just power it it’s only a solenoid beware they fail in the hot setting so test the power to the old valve first you need a test light not a meter
