E34 540i (5hp30) tranny question! "black or green"?
Question 94 e34 540i tranny questions! 5hp30
ok, i bought a very nice looking e34 540i for 250$, The guy i got it from didn't know how to drive it with the (transmission program error)! and instead of me fixing the valvebody issue it has, i'd rather replace it.....it feels like the tranny is slipping in the program mode with the trans selector in (M). and i fear the A clutches will need to be replaced! and along with the 200$ rebuild kit and 130$ valve body kit, and 150$ worthe of fluid and the 80$ filtran filter i'd just assume replace it with another (zf 5hp30) i have......the only problem is that one has the Green tag and the one in the car has the black tag! does anyone know the difference between the two or is it just the fluid type?
i'd really apreciate the help if anyone knows? i'm just trying to do a fairly flawless swap and really don't want to run into any fitment or electrical issue's!
Thanks all
any tips on doing this job would be greatly apreciated also
do you think there geared differently? the 5hp30 i'm putting in my 540i is out of a 740i? both cars have the m62 in them......not sure how my e34 540i ended up with the 4.4l but there the same motor!
So you have an M62 4.4L in an E32....strange, but if thats what you have.....the 740 box should be fine, I have a 740 box in my 735,,no difference as far as Ive noticed, all I had to do was change the rear coupling so my propshaft would fit...have a look at the diagrams of each here:
ha ha, yeah it's an 95 e34 540i that i'm trying to put the 740i tranny in, and the 740i is actually an "il" also.....will that make a difference? both u.s. catalyst tags are stamped with the m62 engine code....i feel at this point and from talking to you in the past, that it should be a fairly flawless swap! i mearly reposted to see if anyone else had some input.....pro's and cons mainly..
sweet!!!!.....i'm gonna start on my swap hopefully this wednesday! i'll try to take as many detailed pics as possible and poet them! pulling the tranny doesn't look very scary......but these vb's kinda do. hopefully i don't have to rebuild and swap my old one over!
If you do have to swop over the VB its the bigger headed torx screws that hold it to the box body, there are quite a few, do not undo the smaller headed ones......

I stepped in a plate of Pasta the other day - now I have to worry about my Carbonara footprint!
i'd have to rebuild my old vb anyways.....no-reverse, and i'm pretty sure one of the clutch drums in my old tranny is cracked....witch would lead me to beleive the main valve is bad. but i'll be sure not to touch the little one's in my new tranny! maybe i can sell that vb on e-bay or something...if i have to swap them!
