E34 525tds Electronic Igniton problems

Hey guys
I have a 1996 525tds Diesel, and every so often whilst driving, at random times, the car loses power but the engine is still running and then power comes back on a second later .
it happens sometimes after a gear change but not always, and sometimes when the car is just driving along at a constant speed.

Sometimes the Electronic ignition lights on the dash comes on but not always, so am not even sure if it is that.

Am looking for some indication of what it might be and what parts to look for before taking it in to a garage and them making me buy something i may not need.

Would love some of your thoughts.

What light comes on exactly? Diesels have no ignition system (spark); the fuel is compression cycle ignited (diesel mist injected into the newly compressed/hot intake air). So my first look would be issues with the fuel system.

Apologies for my poor description the light is described inthe Owners manual as the Electronic Fuel Injection Control. not ignition.

I'd have a look at a code reader to find out what fault may exist in the injection system.

I think one of my neighbours has a code reader, I will see if it can be used on my car.
