DRL's (Daylight Running Lamps)

I believe the requirement to have DRL's was first introduced in Sweden but is now quite universal. In Canada recently I noticed that most vehicles had them as just about every vehicle in motion was very clearly visible in all conditions. My 2000 model E39 (530TD) supplied originally in Germany, doesn’t have them nor can I find any mention of such light control (under any name) mentioned in the Bentley manuals. Does anyone have any idea if it's possible to retrofit a suitable module that would effectively provide my car with DRL's?

day time running lamps have to be activated at the dealership...It's a car memory function, no retrofit required.
