Well I checked the bulb before posting my Q..it looks alright. My tail light is on, but not the 'brake light'.
You know what I mean.
Brake light circuit???
Those bulbs typically have two filaments in them, one for the lower-intensity tail light, and one for the brighter brake light. It's probably just the bulb; the brighter filament probably broke. Go spend a few bucks and just replace it before you start worrying about anything else.

I had a right mission when I replaced my brake light bulb, I was changing the wrong one! When you lift the boot, half the light cluster goes up with it so I was changing the inside bulb when the one that had gone was the one on the outside,
I know theres no real excuse for that but in my defence I had only just bought the car and my bulbs were blowing like a pornstar :P

As mrogers said, its a dual filament bulb... it may look ok to you, but the brake light is failing because part of the bulb is burned out. If you dont want to spend a few bucks, swap the right and left out to double check...
dunno how different it is, but with my 528E i have a little bulb holder the bulb goes in and that runs onto a metal board, after a while they can get rust on them and stop the flow of electricity..but u mite not have that.
