hello i have a 1998 BMW 540i and my driver door won't open. i have the door panel off. i can operate the door handles and they move the peice on the latch. it seems the lock mech is broken. when i pull on the inside door handle cable it moves the lock rod down. and when i pull the outside door handle there is a click but wont open. how do i open my door to replace the latch?
I am a ASE master technician and work at a chevrolet dealership so im mechanicly inclined. this is my personal vehicle so i really need to get it fixed.
i have the same problem with passenger side door and posted the same question and got no response. a friend is coming over the weekend to try and figure it out with me.i didn't know that the panel could come off with the door closed..if we can fix it i'll let you know how its done
that would be awsome! tell me how it goes and how difficult it is. yeah its not completely off becouse u cant get to one screw inside of the vent. you have to kinda tear up the side of it to get it off. How much did u get a latch for and where did you get it? on anouther forum a guy sent me a diagram on how to remove the outside door handle so i think you have to do that to get to the latch. if you want the diagram i can send it to you.
yes please send it to me.. the more info on where everythings located the better.. my door seems to lock and unlock fine but the door won't open from inside or out so something may simply be disconnected from the handles. if you can get the door open the panel will come off and you have access to the problem but with it closed theres no way to fix it
