interesting, the first thing i ever learned how to do on a car was how to replace the brakes. i've now either done or been a part of so many DIY's I've lost count. I've now touched every system on the car.
I've either done or assisted with several brake jobs, never an issue. In fact, I rarely use "power" tools.
I am not a mechanic (far from it, I'm an IT guy), and never did anything mechanical until I decided to start working on my e36.
DIY isn't for everyone, and yes you can injure yourself or the car. Yes, there's an investment in tools required. Sounds like you have found out DIY isn't for you.
I have found the assistance from the members of the BMW Car Club of America, various internet forums (including this one), and the Bentley service manual to be invaluable.
I love ALL of my Craftsman tools, but I have supplemented them with "Lifetime Guarantee" items from Harbor Freight. It is a great VALUE. I have not had any major problems thus far with their stuff.
