I just faced this questions, and didn't know the answer... please help me answer it.
Someone asked me if my car came with sport or premium package?
I bought my car used and didn't know about the two packages. How do I know my 1997 528i's package type?
What is the difference between Premium & Sport packages?
I think the answer is suspension. Tighter ride... If you have the sport package you will have an "M" badge on the shifter and the steering wheel. Also i believe the trim around the door windows will be black instead of chrome. The Wheels are also different, low profile tires and larger rear tires than the fronts. Easy to see from the outside, easier to feel on a curvey road with some knots (speed). I am sure there is better ways to find out, from some of these guys that know much more about BMW than I. But I do love my 540i with the sport package!
go to bmwtips.com and check the specifications tab
then choose e39 link and it will have all the information you need to know. So you can see what your car has and what it could have had. And yeah, i hope you got the sports package because otherwise you won't be able to enjoy it.

rjr, you are wrong sir!
got o bmwtips.com and read what it says in specifications.
nav. and fancy stereo are all different packages, and that navigation is only available with purchase of another package (which is premium or sport i think)
and leather is in all cars made in US. i think the only non-leather 5-series bmw i've seen was in europe.
