I'd keep my fingers crossed if I were you...........
..... the diesels are BRILLIANT! especially the 3.0
We have got the standard sizes in the UK and are now waiting for the 3.5 in the Autumn.

I got the wife a 2003 VW Jetta TDI (Automatic, diesel was a big enough jump for her) because the has a 70 mile round trip drive to work every day. I must admit that for some reason I get quite a charge out of driving it and take it out any time I can. The 43 MPG cruising at 75-80 MPH, and the fact that diesel has been $0.20-0.30/gallon cheaper is also appealing, if you have other stuff to spend your hard earned dollars on besides fuel that is...
I'm ready for a BMW diesel, from all accounts they make the best diesel engines in Europe and have a 40% market share. I suspect that once we get the low sulphur diesel fuel in the USA they will consider giving us a diesel or two in their line-up.

I love old MB 300Ds. Those things are dangerously slow, but they are unbreakable and get awesome gas milage. I always wanted one -- still do. I just want to have a diesel powered car.
BMW make the cleanest and quietest diesels in Europe, for def. Cheaper car maker's diesels are very noisy and smoke under herd acceleration.
Diesels are so popular in the UK due to the tax allowances for people with company cars.
Long gone are the days when derv-drinkers are not an option for driving finatics. The 330d changed everyones opinions packing a punch of nearly 200bhp and 300lb/ft of torque! (more than a 911! whooo!)
BM have just released this summer the 330cd. The first 2dr sports coupe diesel..... and it is beautiful. (more torque through the revs than an M3!)
I'm hoping that they might make a 335cd but it would probably be quicker than the M3.
"how bout a 7.0l v12 diesel?"
"gas prices wouldn't allow it"
What do you get in the Hummer H-poo?
The one you want is the VW V10.... 550lb/ft of torque at 2000rpm, pretty good for an oilburner!

I think diesels may eclipse petrol when they introduce the 7spd smg through the range. The real thing that hinders them is the short rev range, which tops out at 6krpm.

Well, when they are stationery with the engine running, you can hear that it is a diesel which goes "ticka-ticka-ticka-ticka" (a bit of onomatopoeia for ya) You can hear from outside but only a little inside.
Once you get going, it sounds (almost) like a normal 6. Obviously it doesn't rev quite a freely as a petrol but you'd be surprised of the performance it dies give.
Exterior noise at road speed it negligible.
There is something quite endearing about diesels, if you get them take one for a spin..... you might have a pleasant shock.

I for one hope they definitely bring the new ones over to the United States. I have owned a 1986 524td (smashed, unfortunately) and currently own a 1985 524 European model and I love them. 5-series size with close to 30 mpg, can't beat that. The older ones are unfortunately a little under powered. Needs to have the power of the new motors. And yes, the old ones sound like a school bus!
Yeah, I was recently in Italy and the 530d were everywhere. Very quiet, and seemed just as quick as gas engined 5 series. I was driving a Opel Vectra (4 cyl. turbo diesel) I liked it a lot. Gave me a totally different perspective on diesel engined cars, as i have never owned one. I would definitely like to see BMW bring 530d and 535d here to US!!
