I'm sure it's happened b4. What can I do to make it new again, and what am I looking at for cost? I've had the car for 3yrs. (1999 540i) and like a dope this is the 2nd time on the forum-VERY INFORMATIVE...should have read these 3yrs. ago!
A nearly universal problem for E39s. it is caused by weak solder joints on the LCD assembly. The solution is total replacement of the instrument cluster.
The good news is...it won't cost much. BMW "should" replace it free, all but labor at a BMW mechanic. Having done it myself already, it takes a while to get the paperwork in order, but a new cluster only cost me in total about $50.
Contact Lenora Vladovich at BMW-NA (BMW-North America)
I dont have her email on hand, but she souldn't be hard to find. If i get it, ill pass it along.
yukn.... I had to replaced mine earlier this year as well. BNWNA only offered to pay for half the parts. My cost was $450...
Good luck
Her email is leOnora.vladovich@bmwna

"NO...Do not buy the replacement yet! Contact BMWNA customer relations and see if they will arrange for your dealer to replace it for you. You only have to pay an hour's labor."
