Thumbs up

I have a 2001 530i, and there is something weird about my ashtray in the center console. I went to go clean it out by sliding the door past resistence point and it pops out. Which I did just fine. But when I put it back in, the latch under is not catching. This is the first time I have ever taken out the ashtray. Is there something Im missing? Without the ashtray in the hole you can see the latch being pulled fwd with the door closing. But theres something about the gear and the underlatch that is not catching. Nothing seems to be broken. Unless a spring was never installed to apply the needed pressure against the latch.

Thank you for any suggestions,
Chris

The gear turns... all the parts seem to be working, it just wont grab the latch under the removable ashtray

I am now having this exact problem on my 1998 540i. I am going crazy trying to get the thing to stay closed, and have just about given up. I am thinking of gluing the damn thing closed since I never use it, but am afraid of resale consequences. Anyone else seen this before, or more to the point, fixed it?

Thanks

I had to replace mine....the problem is to replace it you have to buy the ENTIRE panel that is just below the wood trim. It cost about $160. I love it, $160 for a problem part that probably costs 50c.

Did they even tell you what the problem is? I can't even find where the catch is supposed to be..I'm guessing underneath somewhere?

A friend has suggested gluing velcro to the asktray and the underside of the lid, I might try that if it's really $160.
