Hello BMW fans! thanks is advance for your replies. I have 2002 525i and yesterday i went out on my lunch break to my car and there was coolant all over the parking lot ( i drive 55 min to and from work each day) car did NOT overheat on the way to work or even home form work when i left. i thought it was the thermo gasket because i saw coolant residue on the upper coolant hose. stopped at dealership got the gasket replaced it last night filled up with coolant and drove around. Parked it checked it and coolant was not dripping out it looks as though it was flowing freely. its very strange and i really wish i would have found the posts before mentioning to overhaul the coolant system every 60k miles. i have about 175k and have only replaced what was needed when it failed. ugh!!
The leak is coming down what looks to be the front of the engine behind the water pump possibly or maybe even a crack in the block/ head. it leaks a lot even when the car is not running. i had coolant issues in the past as i have recently replaced the rad, tank, shroud, and some hoses.
Question: in these coolant faulty e39's is it a good idea to replace EVERYTHING pertaining to the coolant system when doing an overhaul to the coolant system? and if so does anyone have a diagram or a list of some sorts of what needs and should be replaced every 60k?
if i overheated my engine about 2 months ago to the red and drove it for less than 3 min would it come to a point down the road where the head/ block could just crack out of nowhere? Also it happened one day on my drive home from work, the car was all but empty of coolant ( i didnt know until i got home) and the temp was staying where is should be until i got off the exit and stopped at the stop sign then it shit right into the red. i live 3 min from the exit and figured it might be okay to do it quickly (prob shouldnt have done that now looking back on it)
also (not a good idea) but is it doable to continue driving when you loose coolant but the engine doesnt overheat at the same time? can driving 70 mph could keep the engine cool enough to continue driving?
Sorry for long post!:|
