Can anyone tell me how the hell can I get the codes to start on my 1991 525i ?
I heard that I need to turn the ignition on and press the gaz pedal 5 times within 5 seconds to see the engine light check go on and teh codes to appear.
When I do this....NOTHING happens? the iginition is ON (i see all the lights on my board:SRS/ENGINE CHECK/OIL..ETC....) BUT NO CODES.

make sure you fully depress and fully release the pedal each time.

Oh, i thought this works on all cars.
Rakshp, the codes are to determine from the ODC what is wrong in your car. Everytime something is wrong(ignition, etc... there is a code that is sent to your ODC and this is what you can read out with the codes.
OK, people, relax. Here are the codes: http://www.troublecodes.net/bmw/bmwcel.shtml
Here`s how it works (at least in all E34, E32 and E36 models/
Turn ingnition key on, but do not start the engine. Then tap your gas pedal to the floor 5 times, about 2 pushes/sec, and watch "check engine" light on dash. It shoulld start blinking... blink-blkinblink-blink-blkinblink means 1212, which is O2 sensor, I hope you understand what I`m trying to say.. Don`t give up if you cannot get it from the first time - it took me 15-25 tries to get "check engine" light bkinking!!!! Good luck - Cheers-
