clutch/flywheel

hello everyone...im new here and was referred by another member. my 95 jetta was totaled last week, i loved the car, now id like to try a bmw, i am looking at an 88 5 series 528 e its a fairly clean car, the dash has a few cracks, and no rust, everything works, has been repainted in spots but it still looks good, its a fl car, the abs brake light is on but the owner said he did the brakes last year and they feel tight so im not too worried about that, the engine light is on which may be an o2 sensor, the enjine purrs with 150k the issue is the clutch... the owner said it gradually became sloppy until the car would not move, now it sits in his driveway alongside 2 brand new cars. when i tested it the car moved forward a hair in forward and back a hair in reverse...no noises but a high pedal and almost no movement. i called a specialist for a price and to rebuild the clutch will cost 280.00. not an issue to me...however if its the flywheel i have to pass, cant put that kind of $$$ into it. so my question is "how can i tell if its just the clutch or the flywheel or both without taking it to a garage". i think it would just be silly to play around with the flywheel as it is cost prohibitive at this time. so what do you folks think...should i run and not look back? he wants 800 bucks. thanks for reading
