Cloud of blue smoke

2000 540i sometimes lets out a blue cloud of smoke at startup. It doesn't always do it. It also has a small miss during idle.
Does anyone had this problem before?

That will be the PCV valve on its way out...#2 here :

Although it says cover then other numbered parts it is now made as one unit so all you need is that and the gasket,they are only available from BMW dealer so you can show them on the screen what you want although they will be able to cross match the part #.

Generally, blue smoke is oil. Is it a high mileage car? Hopefully just the PCV but could also be valve seals. Especially if it's a "puff" at start up. Good luck with it.
