I've got a 1997 540 with 247,000 miles. I believe I may have either a drive shaft or center bearing issue. I am hearing a clanking sound under load, starts off in 1st Gear, a little in 2nd, then dissapates, but on acceleration, I hear some clicking/clanking, then it goes away.
Any ideas? Also, does anyone have a real rough estimate of what it costs to replace the whole drive shaft (located in Southern California)
Thanks much.....I am trying to hit the 300,000 mile mark. Suprised how well the car runs but maintain it very well!

probably the center bearing is worn out,the bearing by it self is not so expensive, check all the joints maybe there is no need to replace the whole drive shaft, parts for rebuild are not so expensive the job is pain in the ass but you will not know until you take exhaust and aluminium protection down;let us know
