I'm not sure exactly which one it takes, for your car. If you had an E34 I could . Maybe someone else will pipe in. Your owners manual should let you know, and some fuse panels are labeled, not sure about yours though.

I bet it is the fuse. If memory serves I think it is a 15 amp. The fuse panel SHOULD be right above the battery and it has a slot map.
When my lighter stopped working, I replaced the fuse only to have it immediately blow as soon as I slipped it in. Turns out my cig lighter had a short in it. I went to Wally world and bought a $3 universal replacement lighter and wired it in using some electrical tape and old lamp cord to extend the cars original wiring.
The new lighter was a very tight fit but it looks good and works.
good luck.

Also, you dont know how many times I have seen the lighter socket in a parent's car get a penny tossed in there. It fits perfectly and it shorts out the contacts. But this usually is because they dont have a lighter element in the car, or tossed in the glovebox because of a radar detector/cellphone/etc.
Just a little funny scenario I thought I'd toss in...

Usually just remove the penny, replace the fuse and its all good. You may have to replace the lighter socket like OzarkMark did. There may have been some more permanent damage done to yours...
