choosing oil & filter

I have a R [1998 reg] 520 - juts done 100k. oil change light is on. I need some advice on choosing oil. my garage have told me they will fit a 'coopers' brand filter and with fully synthetic oil [duckhams]. good choice ? the car has been meticulously maintained at a main dealer up unitl now - given the age and mileage am i compromising anything buy not taking it to my local BMW dealer for an oil change.

If you are not going to take it to the dealership...BMW recommends using Castrol Synthetic oils. Get the oil filter from BMW though. BMW filters are capable of filtering down to 5 microns....other aftermarket filters will not. The life of your engine depends on the oil and how well it's filtered. I hope you find this helpful.
