So you say your car has SMGII, my M3 has SMGII also so I have a few questions for you:
First, How do you like it? Personally I love mine except for minor problems. When I say minor problems, I mean this bucking thing that happens. You haven't been on the forums too long i'm guessing from your one post but it used to be a big topic. When I am at a stopsign and I roll it just so it begins to shift to first and I give it gas it begins to buck. Do you have this problem? I may have made it sound worse then it really is by the way, I have gotten used to not letting it take over like that now.
Hey that's my car! Well, it should be. In any event, I plan to order one somewhat similar. My intention is to replace my now badly aging 1986 325eS with a 2005 545I six-speed. Will order winter package, folding seats, Nav, park distance control and lumbar support. Oliveen green (which looks neither green nor olive colored) with beige interior
Have considerd the HUD but it seems to offer very few features for $1000. As I recall you can project speed, Nav data (essentially the right side of the nav screen but not the map) and data from the adaptive cruise control. How do you like it? Have you found it useful or just a neat toy?
For both you and powerm: How do you like the SMG apart from the problem at stop signs? Are you long time MT drivers or have you just switched over from an automatic? I drove a 530 with SMG for about an hour and it certainly seemed better than an automatic or the dreaded Triptronic. To me, it felt like it was doing a fair job of mimiking a manual. You get that little bump between first and second and second and third just like an MT. Also, when you put it in first (or reverse) the car doesn't start to creep unless you give it some gas.
Main problem I had was not instinctively knowing when to shift like I do with an MT. I've driven nothing but manuals since I started buying cars so manual shifting is very much second nature to me. Have you found that you pick up the timing on SMG and are shifting as efficiently as you were with an MT?
I live in the DC Metro area and one of the appealing features of SMG is that, when I get caught in one of the endles traffic jams on the Beltway, I could switch over to automatic. But, my fear is that I'd get so in the habit of doing this that, after a while, I'd get lazy and find myself in automatic all the time. What has you experience been?

In my M3, it is sooo embarassing... I hope it never happens to you, to the unknowledgable person looking at you, they think that you are a TERRIBLE Manual driver.
