ok so i have a 1993 525i auto with 184,xxx miles and the check engine light comes off and on!
the only thing that i noticed on the car is that when the light is on and i turn the car on it jumps to 1,000 rpm and wen it starts to idle it idles in the 400-500 rpm range. it does that for a while till i put it in drive. also when its idling like that, it sounds like the car is going to just turn off...
wen the light is off the car turns on and runs perfect. idk whats wrong with the car!! i changed the oil evry 3500miles so i know its not anything bout the oil
maybe a messed up sensor or what?
if n e one has an idea on what might be causing this problem HELP!!!
Could be a problem with your ICV (idle control valve). Sometimes they get dirty and the car idles oddly. What you're talking about also sounds like a possible vacuum leak.
I would check the ICV first, that seems to be a common problem with e34s, I had a simular problem with my 91 525i, I never got it fixed though because it didn't bother me too much, it was kinda like a light massage at red lights haha.

The ICV in your car is almost hidden under the intake manifold and is not an easy job to pull it out. I have never tried it but whenever I read people stories they mention scrapes, loss of skin, etc. Some even take the intake manifold off to do it.
