I just changed the starter on my 1997 540i 6 speed to find out the problem was not the starter now 300$ dollors later and car still wont start what would be the next option and where to find it gents please come thru ........
What are the symptoms?...
Does it just "click"? If yes then it could be a poor earthstrap connection...
Does the starter turn? If yes then it will be one of many other things !
Please give more info ;-)

THanks for responding and it clicks once then it nothing.......it use to be click nothing try again ...try again then work.......now just a click HELP PLEASE>>>>>>going nutz mechanics are scared of it .....dont want to throw more money out during christmas...
Okay, this is joserodrigo's wifey. When we try to turn on the BMW it only "CLICKS" once and that's it. So we tried push starting it man-power at first, then again with the help of another car pushing us. NO LUCK. So we took the next step and bought a new starter. NO LUCK. Still clicks. Now what??? What is the "Earthstrap connection???" PLease tell me it's something I just have to connect MYSELF!!! Thank you!! help!!
The earthstrap is the fat cable that connects the engine to the body as a "Earth/Ground"...
Now for the "Click", is it a relay click or is it the solenoid on top of the starter that clicks?
If it is a relay click then maybe a wiring fault from relay to starter.
If its a solenoid click then there is not enough power getting to the starter to spin it, again, a wiring fault.

i don't mean to sound silly, but did you check the battery for a loose connection? the starters have a voltage regulator and that can go bad too. the other parts of the car can be on and not pull too much, but then the starter uses a lot more juice...or did you already figure this out? i am curious
