Cool Car's Computer affected by cold?

I live in Seattle with my 540i 1995 model. It was outside in the cold for the last week at about 25 degrees average. I was on holiday and when I returned after a few days. Car would not start. Lights come on, displays come on, but no crank...no nothing when you turn the key to start. Then one hour later, I tried again, the car starts just fine, but the transmission switch went to Manual shift. No matter what you do, can't get it back into auto. every time you move switch to auto, settings go right back to manual. Can cold weather affect a computer like that?

It can be, but 25 degrees is nothing. My E36 has seen -29F and still started fine. A good battery plays a big part in that. You will have to perform the "stomp test" as it is OBDI to see what trouble codes the computer is storing.
