Can't Turn Steering Wheel

Well, I can nudge it, but not enough to even come close to driving it. I can turn on my ignition, move forwards and backwards, but can't steer. I have a 2002 BMW 540i, 98k miles.

When I started my car this afternoon, I heard a strange popping sound, which I'm guessing is the cause. Earlier today, I also noticed a different/louder sound while in the lower rpm's of 1st gear, but everything else sounded normal.

I had to leave my car in a parking lot and am going to get it towed to my service shop.

Anyone have any ideas on what could have happened or what the problem is?

Have you looked at the power steering? Maybe a belt has snapped.

I know nothing about cars so I would have no idea where to start. I guess I'm just looking for ideas on what could be wrong so I can figure out what to expect when I take the car in to the shop.

power steering pump on its way out, low on fluid , belt broken or slipping.
