What do you mean by "they became neutral"?
Does the display on the instrument cluster say N in all gears? The tranny is a seperate (unit wise) mechanical peice, so something like this shouldnt really happen unless the tranny was out.
Usually when a tranny dies or a seal completely blows (like a few of our past cars) this happes. It just revs, but wont go anywhere. We've never had a check engine light go out though - and our gear indicator always said the gear we were in.
