Hey guys, I'm new to the bimmer world and was looking at getting into a 5 series soon and was wondering what I should look for? I was looking at the 1998-2000 range. What models have what certain details I need to look for? Thanks guys.

540, or an M5 because they are the fastest

I dont know much at all about 5 series. I guess try to find one you like and get it fully inspected by a BMW mechanic, or perhaps try to find another 5 series owner that is local and have them drive it also.

hi and welcome nick56.
i have a 1997 528i luxury package (i believe). some call it executive. it includes chrome window trim with brilwood accents inside the car. the car is equipped with 15" wheels and tires with a full spare (not a donut). i purchased 18" wheels for summer use. heated seats are not available on my car, but other executive models have them. ???? the car has a durable inline 6 which makes just shy of 200 hp. not bad for a 4,000+ lb car. leather is the preferd interiors with one of the best audio systems. cluster gage color is orange (maybe red) with full time accent light that shines down from roof. this is a bmw only feature. you should expect 25 to 30+ mpg on hw depending on driving and trans type. mine is a 4sp automatic and i avarage 30mpg hw. 528i sport models are also available with more aggressive stance and larger wheels, its aslo has other distinct features, like hid lighting, back up sensors, built-in cell phone and window shades are just some. if i was to buy another, id probably go for the sport model, mayby even the 540i. v8 with 6sp. good luck.

common problems with the 528i are cooling system, but periodic check ups will prevent a major damage. radiator cracking, thermostat freezing, sensor probs. and so-forth. i've heard of electrical issues associated with 540i models.
you can check the 5-series forums to see the troubles members are having with there vehicles.
