bmw e39 tiptronic retrofit? possible?

hei.
i just bought a 96 bmw e39 523ia euro model (live in norway)
the car has a automatic gearbox pretty standard one, is it possible to get steptronic gearbox whitout changing the enitre gearbox?

It would mean a new gearbox...

I know on the 740/540 you can just swap the EGS and Shifter assembly and change 2 wires and add a wire... sooo i'll have to look more into this.....

Could you get the Part number on you EGS for me?? the Steptronic gearbox ad non steptronic gearboxes are the same steptronic is just the controls and programming....

were can i find the egs number?
im curently at work in the north sea but im going home on monday and can check it out.
or can i send an email to bmw norway and get the number?

so you think it's possible to do this?

i have the chassinr, can i use this to "decode" the vin and get some info about this?

I beleve it might be possable... you can find the EGS(transmission control ECU) Part number on the side on the ecu... I'm trying to find all the Info via Realoem.... also what is your build date?

i found a gearbox for sale here in norway if i have to change it.

have a pic of the codes on the box

but isnt it just then to change the ecu if it's no the right one?

found a "replacement" ecu from another 523ia

number on the part: 0-260-002-429
1-423-642

According to Realoem you CAN retrofit it but i'm gonna have to look at the wiring....look for a 523i ecu that is from a car with steptronic

well that was not the vin, it is the chassis nr.

production date is 02/1996

yep and 2 wires Let me figure out the wiring on the 523i compared to the 740 e38 It is 1 am here I should post back late tomorrow

does it have to be a 523? doesnt the 523 and 528 use the same tranny?
