Hi, I have a BMW 520I SE E39 1997 2.0 6cyl, the cars stalls at least once a week, I notice that the more petrol I put in the worse it is, also last time stalled, I took off petrol cap and car started straight away, and if leave cap off much better and car also seems to go better too. I thought it might be crank pos sensor, but now think it is fuel pressure problems? If anyone has any ideas or help, it would be much appreciated thanks
As part of the Emission control system fuel tank caps often have a valve that lets air in but not out, (hence you get pressure in the tank when you open it on a hot day).
If the valve is blocked you will get some vacuum in the tank (especially if the weather is cold) which will not help fuel flow. The less fuel there is I guess the less vacuum due to the greater volume of air???
Good answer... Thats Physics for you in a nut-shell !
