I have a 1995 530i that runs perfectly but decides on hot days when sitting in the sun not to start.
Key turns fine, all the dash lights are working, engine won't crank though...key just turns all the way.
After about 20 mins it will sometimes decide to then crank and will run fine. Sometimes though it may take even longer....

i have a 1995 E34 with the exact same problem.. id dosent start when hot and may take anywhere from 10 min to an hour to start up again. otherwise it runs great. please help
If the car is sitting in the sun, but hasn't been started that day do you still have the same fault, or does the problem only occur if the car has been driven and then sits in the sun? What happens during the 10 - 60 minute interval between when you first try to start the car and it actually starting, do you leave it sitting with the bonnet or windows open to cool down the motor or interior?
If the car has been sitting in the sun all day and has NOT been driven it starts fine.if i drive for a short distance say 5 to 10 min and turn it off it usually starts fine..but an average drive of 20 min or more if i turn it off it will not come on.While trying to start it it dosent make any cranking sound its just silent .so what i usually do is try in 10 min intervals to start it and depending on how long i have driven after a while it starts just fine.
