had some problem before with my bmw 540ia with engine and transmission failsafe after a faulty thermostat that burned out a 30Amp fuse in the fusebox right beside the DME. After i replaced the fuse the car drove just like new..
But then after about 100km i had to test if the new fuse and change to a new thermostat really fixed the problem with safe program..
I floored it and then in higher revs and about 60mph the familiar "gong" and engine failsafe came on and the car went in limpmode.. so i stopped at a parking slot and turned off the car, then turned it on again. Then the failsafe were gone and the car drove fine again..
I stomped the car the day after while i had a cheap diagnostic tool connected to the OBD2, after a couple of kickdowns the car went to failsafe and the faulty codes were:
P0700 Transmission Control System (MIL Request)
P0605 Internal Control Module Read Only Memory (ROM) Error
P0505 Idle Air Control System
P0100 Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit
The P0100- MAF code were "PENDING" and it were the only code that not went away with a reset or deleting codes, all the other fault codes cleared right away on restart of the car..
I also had the ASC light on after the restart of the car.. then restarted one more time, and it went away.
The battery is fine and the alternator also. The engine holds 700rpm while idling, but feels ia little sluggish/slow/hesitating when put in "drive" and drive away.
It can be some bad grammar!! // Swedish
