BMW 540i Reliability?!

Hey All.

Im currently deployed in iraq and i have been looking into getting a 5 series BMW when i get back to the states. but after seeing the first couple of post in this forum ive noticed a lot of Beemer problems. ive always heard about how much work has to be done on BMW's and how much maintanance is required. i just want to know how good a 540i is and wanted to know everyones take on thier bmw experience. thanks!!!

i have a 1994 530. its a good car. i have had it for a year and its been wonderful. i have a few issues to resolve at the moment, and its related to increased fuel consumption. if u think BMWs have issues, try any other performance car forums!! u will be shocked. the problem with bmw's is usually the owner (and his mechanic) my former mechanic should be shot. now i have a new guy in my cvurrent location and we are gradually solving the problems caused by my former mechanic. i still drive the car everyday though, and every other weekend i do between 400 and 800 km with the car!! yet i do not believe its where i want it to be.

"if u love the car and it check out, buy it. if u ar thinking of fuel consumption only, why buy a bmw? u cannot possibly get toyota or honda type fuel economy unless u only intend to have the car parked at your guarage!!! find a friend who has a BMW and loan it for 2-3 days, drive it for 2-300 kilometers / miles, and come back to this forum

A BMW is designed for people who love to drive. and drive you will if u buy the 540i. BMWs drive hard without stress, and they hate being left at home for long periods

Go ahead and keep your Z for fun and games...just know that bimmers are amazing driver's cars.

My bimmer is highly modified. The last thing that failed on me was the radiator, which does die in all 5 series cars about every 75K miles. Other than that, you have to worry about the alternator, thermostat, water pump, valley pan leaks, automatic tranny fluid changes, diff fluid changes...honestly it's a fairly normal list. You're likely to find more things going wrong on this forum simply because this is the kind of place we come when things go wrong.

I absolutely love my 5, don't get me wrong. But if you're used to the size of car of the 350Z and the 240sx, why not get yourself an E36 or E46 M3?

Yeah i plan on keeping my z for the track. i would love to get any sporty 3series but i would be very tempted to take it to the track. but so far the 5series has everything im looking for especially in looks and power. and i just want a car for the cruzin and weekend driving aspects. i actually see a lot of beemers and benz'z out here in the dessert. a lot of haji's drive em and third country nationals. but yeah well see what happens when i get into the US.

Well for weekend cruising, I don't think it gets much better than the 5...the 7's got cooler gadgets and more room, but doesn't move quite as expeditiously in its V8 form...

Do you have any understanding at all that this thread is six months old and the original author isn't going to come read it?
