I am looking to buy my first bmw i test drove a used 1998 528i and i fell in love the car looks and drives great but i know little to nothing about the cars. I am 18 years old and have been driving honda civics. THe Bmw has 102,760 miles on it and is maroon nothing seems to be wrong with it from my eye The dealer is wanting 10,988 for it .. is that to much? and if anyone can tell me some of the most common things to look for that could be wrong with the car . thank you

p.s how many miles can i get out of the 98 528i ?

First of all if youre buying from a stealership youre getting ripped off. You should aslo run a carfax report. if you provide the vin number im sure someone on this forum will do it. if its a certified pre owned i think youll be fine but if not get it checked out by a knowledgeable mechanic. one of my friends recently bought a 1999 528i and after 2 weeks of driving, hes getting major problems, but then again it wasnt maintained properly by the previous owner who sold it dirt cheap which is why my friend bought it. post some pics! id like to see the car

I went through the same thing when trying to decide to buy my '98 528i. It had 85,000 miles and the dealer wanted $13,988. He let it go for arounf 12,900 with my trade.
Have you tried the N.A.D.A online used car values or the Kelly Blue Book online? Depending on where you live, the dealer may use one but not the other. In the south N.A.D.A commonly used and in California KBB is used more often. It just depends.

I had purchased a 1995 VW Passat GLX with 90K miles from Carmax back in 2001. I ran it up to 180k with mostly highway driving. In about 4 years I put a solid $3500 worth of work into it. The engine was fine, just the interior and things like shocks and struts, ABS, A/C were starting to fall apart. I would've still been driving it today if some idiot hadn't hit me at a red light. Well, now I own a Certified/Pre-Owned 2000 BMW 528i with sport/premium package at 59k miles. This car is like brand new compared to my VW Passat at 90k. So I must say if you take care of it, you could go well into the 200s.

The dealer would be a better bet but it will cost you $$$$, call & find out pricing. Also, remember that these cars are expensive to maintain but they will last a long time if you take care of them. "Pep-Boys" would be the last place I would take the car to!
As for pricing in your area, it sounds like a good deal and the car looks clean

Is there a shop that works on beamers around your area? Find a shop you can trust.

It was probably serviced for something like an injector, ignition coil,or brakes. I just bought a '97 528i with a short shift and 128,500 miles on it for $8,000. So, No , i don't think 10,988 is to much for a car with that kind of mileage. We have an '89 535 wit well over 300,000 miles on it that we use for drift. Still have no problems with it. Just take care of your car and u will never have a problem. Make sure the shop u take it to does every test they can , don't skimp on anything. HAVE FUN.

The E39 "5" series is one of the great cars on the planet, whether it is the 528i, 530i, 540i, etc. In Canada, I paid substantially more for my 97 528i with approximately 68,000 miles on it (dollar exchange). If you buy the car, you'll love it.

I bought a 1998 528i with 108K miles on ebay for $10K from a dealer in Boise. The trade-in values I found from kbb, edmunds, nada were right around this number. The best price at Autotrader.com for the same model and mileage from a private seller in my area was $12K. So, I think I got a good deal on it. I flew from Portland, Oregon to Boise and picked the car up on 5/14. I fell in love with the car on my 530 mile test drive back home.
I got 28.8 mpg cruising I-84 and I-5 at 70-80 mph.
This is my first BMW, but I doubt it will be my last. B)

Exclamation

I bought a 2000 528i its been about 2 years now. I had a 95 supra did upgrades, etc, yadi, yadi ,yadi and so forth. I must say this car is fuckin incredible. Yes its a big change from a jap. car, yeah its gonna be a lot more than servicing and repairs on honda's. But boy is it worth it, everyday when I get into it, feels like a TANK in the sense that I feel very comftable and safe in it, and did I mention its fuckin incredible.
