blower sword or resistor

Car is a 1988 535i E34, right hand drive with climate control
The blower fan only work in maximum speed, all other speed setting has no fan. Smoke and smell from upper vent just before fan speed control dies.
I have look at the various places where the resistor pack or sword is supposed to be located and can find neither.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Two points worth noting:

1. had similar problem; The dealer told me that it was the final stage unit. However, it turned out to be the connector on the back of the climate control module. Where the wiring meets the circuit board. had to be replaced. it worked fine. Came out to be $260 from a dealer in NJ
2. This is what I have gathered from the mechanic at the dealer:the resister pack is part of this module. What he told me is that this module reads the temp. from the cabin and etc then mixes the air to the set temp in addition to other functions.

Anyone out there with a similar problem/response???

p.s. becuase it is right side driver your access to it will be the right passenger side

Would appreciate if u can detail the address.
Also, do you mean the LEFT passenger side, I remove the glove boax (left), and found no air duct or any sword.
