Hey Guys. Love reading the forums. I have a question on something that is driving me nuts. On my 97 528i the light next to the button with a clock on it (on the radio) flashes on and off constantly. What does this mean? I Cant find anything explaining it.

Does it blink when you're driving or when the car is park?

I have a '97 540i and have not noticed it. I used to have a '95 525i and there was an LED light that would blink but that was part of the anti-theft radio system. It would blink only when the car was parked.

I think this is the indicator for parked car ventilation but it should only flash during the programmed time.

Check out the settings by pressing the clock symbol twice in succession. thenpress the off key on the screeb menu

Los,
Thanks for the reply. I have tried doing everything with the clock button and cant get it to go off. The light never stops blinking; driving or parked. I just turned 80k and it has just started flashing within the past few thousand miles.

The only other thing is... do you have the bwm cell phone option????
it should only blink indicating that you have access to 911 only. but this light would be next to the "TEL" button...

I'll look in the manual tonight.

Darn it! nothing... Do this test,

turn the radio on and leave it there for about 30 seconds, then
push the "m" button and hold for 8 seconds... this is a self test for
any type of radio malfuction...
The other thing I keep going back to,
is the timer for the vents. the light will blink when ever it's on.
Check to see if the timer for the vents is on, if so turn it off.

That's it...

I had the same car and sold it last week, waiting for my e60 coming next week. I went to the dealer and asked right after my warranty expired. The technician told me it's a defective unit and it happened on a lot of e39s (528i). It normally happens w/i the first year but mine started to blink a few years later and that really surprised the tech guy. He said you can't do anything except change the entire unit which will cost you over $1,000! Good luck.

its the antitheft alarm indicator. It's supposed to blink only when parked (as in no ignition key). BMW is notorious for messing up with alarm systems. My car alarm goes bad on and off and i already paid $300 to repair it once. You would have the same experience with off market alarms too. So I guess it's just the BMW ghead
If I were you, I would just ignore it since it's not bothing you except it keeps blinking.

The alarm indicator light is right under the rear view mirror for the e39. That blinks only when the alarm is activated. That light Gorister mentioned is for parked car ventilation but it shouldn't blink if the car doesn't have that feature and if that thing is off. I've been annoyed by that light for the past 2-3 years but other than it blinks, it didn't harm your car.

Thanks for all the answers guys. I too am one of the ones that suffer from the sporadic false alarms with my alarm system. Something that seems to set mine off is if I leave my cell phone in the car and someone calls. But other than there just being a few electronical annoyances (such as this light) I cant say I have had any other problems. Thanks again. Cheers

I just did a search and found this post. My light just came on and it is burning steady. Doesn't matter if the car is off or on it is still on. Doesn't matter if the radio is off or on. My car is a '97 528i. I pressed the m button and it seemed to display a serial number. Any thoughts? Thanks.
