Best Engine mods for 540i ?????

I just picked up a '99 540i. I've been told by my friend, who has a 528, that you can't chip the V8's. Is this true? What other route should I go to get a bit more performance. How much are inter-coolers? Better air flow system? Thanks for any input.

Intercoolers wont help you,but a company called DINAN will.

There are places to "chip" your car. Dinan, Revhigh, superchip.
Do a search and your find a lot of info.

Yes a 540 is quick but there is always room for more. I just bought a 1997 540i and I am currently installing an APR Intake, Supersprint Exhaust, H&R Springs and Bilstein Shocks. Dinan offers a bunch of stuff for a 540 but at a high cost. (DINANBMW.com)

Your best bet is to do all mods you are interested in and then see what computer upgrade level is best for you.
