I bought an 89 525 that has gauge issues. None of the gauges or odometer work.
The idiot lights and turn signals are functioning.
I checked the underhood fuse box and they are all intact. There is a open relay socket . If you are on the drivers side the open socket is on the closest row on the left. Does the relay have anything to do with this or do I need a new cluster?
Thanks,
AJ

Sounds liek a problem with your capacitors. These generally cause your gauges to stop function. Is all your lighting still working?

you should pull out the gauge cluster and make sure your connections are all in the back nice and tight. i have an 85 535i and i once rattled the connections loose. Just hope you dont have to replace the whole cluster. it was 100 bucks at the nearest junkyard when i had to go get one to rob the speedo for my car.

It was the board in the cluster. I found a place on ebay that sells reman boards for $140.
It worked perfectly, and the service indicator (?) came to life. Now I get to replace the coolant l
level sensor.

Another Gauge Cluster Question

I've noted the very detailed description of how to remove the instrument cluster on the model under discussion but (a) is this the same as far as you know, on an E39 2000 530 & (b) does one have to have the computer reset in some way after disconnecting the cluster from the wiring? My car does have the computer on board & all I want to do, is replace (probably) just one lamp/bulb to backlight the display (area where distance is shown, is dull). I've even wondered if it's possible to change the faulty bulb without actually disconnecting the wiring harness. Any ideas most welcome & Yes, I'm a new guy in here so a Big Hi to all.

I am not sure about a 2000, but on the E34 you are able to replace the bulbs without anything reseting
