I wish I had fricken digital camera so I could email you a photo of my Alpine White 540i beamer... I'll get one one of these days...
Anyway, I get lots of compliments on my car, I have 18" low profile tires with AC Schnitzer wheels, springs, and a Tri-flow Muffler and it's sharp... I'll get more stuff later on. I'll tint the windows real soon...
I think it looks bitchen with the upgrades and would never think it's a chick car if I was to see one like mine on the street. The wheels make a big difference no matter the color + the car seems like is clean all the time! Don't be afraid to get a white beamer...
The Aspen White on 5 series is so beautiful....its such a pure white....like snow. Get the car.....its a georgeous color! The best white out there I think. Saw a 530 A.White today....SWEET, though a woman was driving.
I think it suits the 5 better than most cars - e34 and e39.
Heres a pic of mine in alpine white, the light wasn't the best at the time and it will look better when I get some wheels, I am after some multispoke Alpinas

Well, sorry to say that I picked a 2000 540i sport, automatic (caved to the wife's demand) cosmos black/sand interior (56K miles). It looked great, although I will always wonder how I would have looked in Alpine. By-the-way, I forgot to mention that we have a alpine white 3-series that my wife drives.
